SSE Weekly Colloquium | 理工学院系列研讨会邀请

The School of Science and Engineering is committed to creating a platform for students and faculty members to exchange ideas and explore cutting-edge research developments in various fields of science and engineering. Starting from 2021 fall, SSE will organize the "Weekly Colloquium" series of seminars every Friday. Each week, SSE will invite our faculty members and distinguished guest speakers from outside the University to conduct academic seminars.

All students and faculty members are invited to join the weekly colloquium!

About the Colloquium

Abstract

Different from robotic manipulation of large-scale objects, robotic manipulation of objects at a smaller scale offers new opportunities for innovation, especially in interdisciplinary biological and biomedical research. This talk introduces development of robotic techniques for the manipulation of biological cells. Typical applications are the micromanipulation of reproductive cells (sperm, egg, and embryos) for clinical treatment for couples who cannot have a baby naturally. This talk will give representative examples showing how robotic cell manipulation and characterization could benefit and advance clinical infertility treatments, including how robotic manipulation could minimize cell invasiveness during cell surgery; how robot vision could facilitate non-invasive characterization of cell properties; and how robotic and automation techniques could assist decision making during treatment. The clinical validation of the developed robotic techniques via clinical trials will also be introduced.

The Speaker

Dr. Zhuoran ZHANG is currently an Assistant Professor and Presidential Young Fellow at SSE. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from University of Toronto (UofT) in 2019, and then worked at UofT as a postdoctoral fellow. His research interests include micro-robotics, medical robotics, robotic cell manipulation, and biomedical instrumentation with applications for clinical assisted reproductive medicine. The questions to answer in his research stem from clinical applications, and the developed techniques, in return, aim to benefit clinical diagnosis and treatments. His techniques are currently under clinical trials in multiple hospitals. His research has been recognized by both the robotics automation society and clinical reproductive medicine society by winning multiple best paper awards, including the Best Paper in Automation Award from the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA), IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters (RAL) Honorable Mention Award, and the Prize for Technical Achievement Award from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) for three subsequent years (2020, 2021, 2022). He is also an associate editor for RAL with an Outstanding AE award.
